A 2-day course designed for qualified or qualifying bodywork therapists who want to specialise and deepen their knowledge in providing services for people living with dementia. The course will explore the use of therapeutic touch to enhance well-being and improve engagement with individuals on their terms and with dignity.
It will cover specialist massage techniques across the body to meet needs and facilitate emotional expression in a dementia-informed manner. Additionally, participants will learn to understand the reasons behind behaviors to co-regulate safely, all through a trauma-informed lens.

A two-day course which covers everything in the one-day course “Massaging Persons Living with Dementia” but with more hands-on practice to learn an extensive repertoire of massage techniques across the body including the legs and some handy hotspots.

To build confidence we’ll dig deeper into the drivers behind behaviour which are usually an effort to communicate an unmet need, desire or unexpressed feelings.

We’ll make space to address your specific concerns and challenges. You’ll be equipped with more tools to confidently broach communication compassionately, given co-regulation techniques to calm your client and hold space more effectively enabling them to feel safe in your hands.

This is about connecting more deeply, engaging more competently with partnership in mind and all through a trauma curious lens, after all, “a calm brain is an enabled brain,” and enablement is at the heart of this course, enabling you to enable your clients enjoy massage on their terms.

For qualifying or qualified bodywork practitioners including massage therapists, reflexologists, physiotherapists, osteopaths and chiropractors.

* Enable autonomy for a person living with dementia to help create a safe space where they are treated with dignity
* Navigate verbal and nonverbal consent
* Understand how the law empowers you and your client
* Distil the benefits of massage specifically for people living with dementia to start to sell your service well
* Understand how the brain can affect a person’s behavioural presentation and how we can gently guide them to an enabling mindset
* Learn how trauma impacts a person living with dementia and how we can traverse difficulties with humanity
* Explore understanding some presentations and behaviours to work towards meeting needs, easing anxiety and reducing medication needs through nurturing touch.
* Provide meaningful engagement through “person led” and “holistic” approaches
* Increase confidence and competence working in this field

1-1 training may be preferable because you would like a personal touch, 1-1 is your preferred style of learning or one of the planned dates does not suit you. 1-1 training provides you with flexibilty of training to suit your specific needs and goals. After successfully completing the course, either in a group or 1-1, qualified therapists will gain CPD points with one or more of the professional bodies. Carers and other professionals will receive a certificate of attendance.
